Artist statement
So much in awe of what is around me and the people in my view, I have difficulty with distortion.  I am left to shape and pare what I see into an emotionally poignant, simple statement that hopefully twangs something in the viewer as well as myself.  So, here I am, a watercolorist, oil painter, sculptor, illustrator and muralist. Believing life is purposeful and truth ever-present, over  which we may stumble or  with which we may knock our heads, I try to paint true things that illustrate what I badly need to learn.

Artist Statement
I have worked with charcoal, pastel, and print, but when I found encaustic it was like coming home. I found my voice and my vehicle. I lose myself in the smells, the colors, the depth, texture and luminosity of a painting. Because encaustic is so immediate and physical I am free to experience the sheer joy of painting. I can paint, layer and scrape to my hearts content.

Sometimes I embed the bits of detritus that I am drawn to when I am outdoors. Beeswax makes an excellent adhesive. I can finally justify my walking with my head to the ground looking for bits and pieces of nature that have found their way to my path. The pieces of metal, feathers, moss, and glass have become part of my paintings.
I work on several pieces at a time and each painting, through the silence and the interaction, talks to me. The painting tells me what it wants and when it is complete. I listen to the painting.

My art speaks to the pure joy of creating something beautiful and fun.

About The Arist

I began painting at the age of 3, and 50-plus years later (GASP!), I'm still at it! Although I took a few art classes in college, I'm mostly self-taught. For over 20 years I supported myself and two kids as a freelance architectural illustrator, something I learned from a retired architect just for the sake of learning, never dreaming at the time it would be a critical part of my life.

Most recently, I've relocated to the glorious Pacific Northwest, have become an empty nester and now have the freedom to return to the fine art and portraiture I love so much. My portraits, paintings and prints have been collected now by admirers from Spain and England to Australia and all across the US. I am thrilled and very grateful!

Date:  April 17th, 24th and May 1st 10am-5pm
Instructor:  Louie Cruz
Cost: $135 for 3 sessions

The form of art Louie teaches will produce a one of a kind sculpture. You will not be using a pattern and thus, there will never be another one like it! The first class will consist of cleaning and removing brittle layers. Once the natural wood grain is exposed, you will shape the wood to it's artistic form. After cleaning, sanding and burnishing a natural oil/wax is then applied. The final step is to mount the piece on a base that compliments the sculpture. Cost is $135 for 3 sessions. Contact Louie Cruz at 360-427-4229 or 425-353-2192 for registration.
